Iconic. Powerful. A masterpiece of Barossa.
Yalumba “The Octavius” Shiraz stands at the pinnacle of Australian winemaking — a wine of depth, precision, and unmistakable pedigree. Crafted by Yalumba from some of the oldest Shiraz vines in the Barossa, this is not just a bottle, but a statement of heritage, craftsmanship, and place.
The name “Octavius” refers to the small, 100-litre oak barrels used in its maturation — a rarity in modern winemaking, and a signature of Yalumba. These barrels, coopered in-house, allow for a greater interaction between wine and oak, building complexity, structure, and a seamless integration of flavour. Combined with fruit sourced from low-yielding old vines, the result is a Shiraz of extraordinary concentration and finesse.
Barossa Valley provides the perfect canvas for such a wine. Warm days ripen the grapes to full intensity, while ancient soils and deep-rooted vines deliver depth and character that cannot be replicated. This is Shiraz at its most complete — rich yet controlled, powerful yet refined.
In the glass, it reveals a deep, inky ruby colour with a near-black core. The aromatics are layered and captivating: blackberry, plum, and blueberry intertwine with notes of dark chocolate, spice, liquorice, and finely integrated oak. There’s an immediate sense of depth, but also elegance — nothing feels excessive, everything in balance.
On the palate, it is full-bodied and intensely structured, yet remarkably smooth. Dense dark fruit is carried by firm, polished tannins, with layers of spice, cocoa, and savoury complexity unfolding gradually. The oak is present but beautifully integrated, adding texture and length without overshadowing the fruit. The finish is long, powerful, and persistent — a wine that lingers, evolves, and rewards patience.
For wine lovers in Ireland, The Octavius represents a rare opportunity to experience one of Australia’s benchmark Shiraz wines. It’s a bottle for special occasions, cellaring, or simply appreciating the height of Barossa craftsmanship. Bold yet refined, it’s a wine that commands attention and delivers in every sense.
