About this product

Juicy citrus, pink grapefruit and resinous tropical hops.
Coastal IPA is Rye River Brewing Company's modern take on the IPA, built around a hazy, fruit-forward profile where citrus, pink grapefruit and tropical hop character take centre stage. Brewed in Celbridge, County Kildare, this 5.2% IPA combines Maris Otter, wheat and oats with a carefully selected combination of Citra, Simcoe and Talus hops, creating a smooth and hazy beer with plenty of hop personality without pushing into the heavier territory of stronger IPAs.

The hop combination is what gives Coastal its distinctive character. Citra brings bright citrus and tropical fruit, while Simcoe adds layers of grapefruit, pine and resin, with Talus contributing further citrus and floral complexity. The result is a beer that feels distinctly modern, but without the excessive bitterness that can sometimes accompany heavily hopped beers. Instead, the emphasis is on juicy fruit, aroma and a smooth, rounded mouthfeel.

Pouring a golden haze, Coastal IPA immediately shows its softer, modern side. The aroma is dominated by pink grapefruit and fresh citrus, with tropical fruit and a gentle resinous character developing underneath. On the palate, the beer is smooth and lightly textured from the combination of wheat and oats, allowing the hop flavours to spread across the palate without becoming sharp or aggressive. Citrus and grapefruit lead into tropical fruit and light pine, with a restrained bitterness keeping everything fresh and balanced.

At 5.2% ABV, Coastal occupies a particularly useful place in the IPA spectrum. It has enough strength and hop intensity to feel like a proper IPA, but remains light and approachable enough for a relaxed session. The beer's smooth texture and relatively restrained bitterness make it an especially accessible choice for drinkers who enjoy juicy, aromatic beers but do not necessarily want the heavier alcohol or bitterness of a West Coast-style IPA.

There is also something particularly appealing about the balance between haze, fruit and bitterness here. Coastal is clearly designed around modern hop varieties, but it does not rely on sheer intensity to make an impression. Instead, it delivers a clean progression from grapefruit and citrus through tropical fruit and gentle resin, finishing dry, refreshing and distinctly hoppy. For anyone looking to explore Irish craft beer, it is a very good example of how Rye River has embraced modern IPA brewing while keeping the finished beer remarkably drinkable.

Why we love it:
Coastal hits a lovely middle ground between juicy modern IPA and genuinely refreshing everyday beer. The grapefruit and tropical hop character give it plenty of personality, while the smooth body and moderate bitterness keep it approachable. A great choice when the mood calls for something properly hoppy, but still easy to enjoy from start to finish.

IPA

Appearance
Golden and naturally hazy, with a bright appearance and a soft white head.

Aroma
Fresh pink grapefruit and citrus lead the way, followed by ripe tropical fruit, floral notes and a subtle resinous character. The aroma is expressive and distinctly hop-forward without being overwhelming.

Palate
Smooth and lightly textured, with grapefruit, citrus and tropical fruit flavours developing across the palate. The oat and wheat character gives the beer a soft mouthfeel, while Simcoe and Talus bring gentle pine and resin beneath the fruit. Bitterness is moderate and well integrated, leading into a clean, dry and refreshing finish with lingering citrus and tropical hop notes.

The combination of citrus hops, moderate bitterness and a smooth body makes Coastal particularly versatile with fresh, spicy and savoury food. The grapefruit character works especially well with dishes where a little acidity and bitterness can cut through richer flavours.

Try it with:

  • Fish tacos, grilled prawns and seafood
  • Spicy Thai, Mexican or Indian dishes
  • Grilled chicken, burgers and BBQ food
  • Pizza with spicy sausage or fresh vegetables
  • Goat's cheese, burrata or mature cheddar
  • Crisps, salted nuts and casual sharing boards

It is also excellent on its own when a bright, aromatic IPA is called for without excessive weight or bitterness. Serve at around 6–8°C to bring out the citrus, grapefruit and tropical hop character while keeping the finish crisp and refreshing.

Based in Celbridge, County Kildare, Rye River Brewing Company is one of Ireland's best-known independent craft breweries. Since 2013, the brewery has developed a reputation for technically precise beers that combine modern brewing techniques with a strong focus on drinkability.

The range covers everything from traditional malt-forward ales to highly hopped modern IPAs, with a consistent emphasis on carefully selected ingredients and recipe development. Coastal shows the brewery's modern side particularly well, combining contemporary hop varieties with a soft, approachable base rather than simply chasing maximum bitterness.
