About this product

Bright, fruity and effortlessly drinkable American Pale Ale.
Backstrand APA is Rye River Brewing Company's take on the American Pale Ale: hop-forward enough to deliver plenty of flavour, but deliberately lighter and more approachable than a full-strength IPA. Brewed in Celbridge, County Kildare, this 5.2% Irish craft beer brings together Strata and Cascade hops over a crisp malt base, creating a beer where fresh fruit, citrus and subtle dank hop character take centre stage. The result is a beautifully balanced pint that feels modern and characterful without ever becoming heavy or aggressively bitter.

Strata is particularly well suited to the style, bringing its distinctive combination of bright fruit, citrus and dank aromatics, while Cascade adds a familiar layer of grapefruit and floral hop character. Beneath the hops, Rye River uses Carapils, Vienna, Wheat and Ale Malts to provide a clean, lightly rounded foundation. Rather than building a heavy malt body, the recipe keeps things deliberately crisp, allowing the hops to remain the star while giving the beer enough structure to stay satisfying from the first sip to the last.

In the glass, Backstrand pours a golden-straw colour with a lively white head. The aroma is bright and expressive, with fresh citrus and ripe fruit joined by a slightly dank, almost resinous hop note. On the palate, the beer is clean and crisp, with a light mouthfeel that lets the fruit-forward hop character come through clearly. There is bitterness, as you would expect from an American Pale Ale, but it remains comfortably below the intensity of a classic IPA, making Backstrand an exceptionally easy beer to drink.

That easy-drinking quality is really where Backstrand earns its place. It has enough hop personality to appeal to fans of modern Irish craft beer, but its lighter body and restrained bitterness make it a much more casual proposition than many hop-heavy beers. At 5.2% ABV, it sits neatly between an everyday pale ale and a more substantial IPA, making it particularly well suited to a relaxed evening, a barbecue, or simply keeping a few bottles cold for when the mood strikes.

For anyone exploring Irish craft beer, Backstrand also offers a good introduction to the American Pale Ale style. It demonstrates how much flavour can be built from modern hop varieties without relying on high alcohol or intense bitterness. Crisp, fruity and refreshing, it is a beer that rewards attention but never demands it — exactly the kind of quality that makes a great everyday craft beer.

Why we love it:
A beautifully balanced Pale Ale that delivers plenty of hop character without becoming overly bitter or heavy. The bright citrus and fruit notes give it plenty of personality, while the clean, crisp body keeps it remarkably approachable.
A great middle ground between an easy-drinking pale ale and a more intense IPA.
The kind of craft beer that works just as well for the seasoned hop fan as it does for someone discovering Irish craft beer.

American Pale Ale

Appearance
Golden straw in colour with a bright appearance and a generous, persistent white head.

Aroma
Fresh citrus, grapefruit and ripe tropical fruit combine with floral notes and a distinctive dank, resinous hop character. A subtle grain and wheat aroma sits underneath, keeping the profile fresh and balanced.

Palate
Crisp and light-bodied, with bright fruit and citrus flavours leading into gentle grapefruit, tropical fruit and subtle resinous notes. The malt provides a clean, lightly rounded base without getting in the way of the hops. Bitterness is present but restrained, giving the beer a refreshing structure before a clean, dry finish with lingering citrus and fresh hop character.

Backstrand's clean body and bright hop character make it an easy food-pairing beer. The citrus notes work particularly well with grilled and fried dishes, while the moderate bitterness helps refresh the palate between bites.

Try it with:

  • Grilled chicken, burgers and BBQ dishes
  • Fish tacos, battered fish and seafood
  • Spicy Mexican or Thai food
  • Pizza, especially pepperoni or spicy toppings
  • Mature cheddar, gouda and other firm cheeses
  • Salted snacks, crisps and sharing boards

It is equally enjoyable without food, especially when you want something refreshing with more character than a lager. Serve at around 6–8°C to bring out the fresh fruit, citrus hops and crisp finish.

Based in Celbridge, County Kildare, Rye River Brewing Company is one of Ireland's best-known independent craft breweries. Since 2013, the brewery has built a strong reputation for technically precise, hop-focused beers that combine modern brewing with excellent drinkability.

Their beers have collected an impressive number of national and international awards, but the real strength of Rye River is the consistency across the range. Backstrand is a particularly good example: modern, hop-driven and full of character, while still being remarkably easy to drink.
