About this product

Generous. Mineral. A step up in southern Burgundy elegance.
Ropiteau Frères Mâcon-Lugny is a beautifully expressive white Burgundy that shows Chardonnay in its most charming, fruit-forward and subtly structured form. Crafted by Ropiteau Frères, this is a wine that sits a step above generic regional Mâcon, offering more definition, more texture, and a clearer sense of place thanks to the distinctive village of Lugny in the heart of the Mâconnais.

Lugny lies within the southern reaches of Burgundy, where rolling limestone and clay-rich soils meet a slightly warmer climate than the Côte d’Or further north. This combination produces Chardonnay with generous ripe fruit, but also a distinctive mineral backbone that keeps everything fresh and focused. It’s a region that has become increasingly respected for offering exceptional value white Burgundy with real personality.

Ropiteau Frères works with care to preserve the natural character of the fruit, using a gentle vinification approach that highlights purity over heavy intervention. A touch of oak influence may be used to add texture and roundness, but the emphasis remains firmly on fruit, freshness, and balance. The result is a Chardonnay that feels both approachable and quietly sophisticated.

In the glass, it shows a bright pale gold colour with soft green reflections. The aromatics are immediately inviting: ripe pear, yellow apple, white peach, and citrus blossom, layered with hints of acacia, fresh almond, and a subtle flinty edge. There is a gentle richness to the nose, balanced by an underlying freshness that keeps it lifted and precise.

On the palate, Mâcon-Lugny is medium-bodied and supple, offering a lovely balance between ripe orchard fruit and crisp citrus freshness. The texture is slightly more rounded than a standard Mâcon-Villages, with a touch of creaminess that sits comfortably alongside its lively acidity. Subtle mineral notes emerge through the mid-palate, leading into a clean, gently spiced finish with good length and finesse.

For wine lovers in Ireland, this is an ideal entry into more characterful white Burgundy. It offers more depth and complexity than entry-level Chardonnay, while remaining incredibly versatile and easy to enjoy. It’s the kind of wine that works just as well for a midweek dinner as it does for a more elevated occasion, especially when you want something elegant without being overly serious.

Why we love it:
A step up from classic Mâcon, this wine brings together ripe orchard fruit, subtle creaminess, and a mineral backbone that gives it real Burgundian character. It’s generous without being heavy, refined without being intimidating — exactly the kind of white Burgundy that quietly wins people over glass by glass.
