Rioja stripped back to its freshest, fruitiest side.
Rioja is famous for wines shaped by time and oak, but there is another side to this celebrated Spanish region — young, vibrant reds where the fruit takes centre stage. Rioja Vega Tinto belongs to that fresher school of Rioja, made from Tempranillo grown around Viana in Rioja Oriental and bottled without the long oak ageing associated with Crianza, Reserva or Gran Reserva wines.
The result is a wonderfully uncomplicated expression of Tempranillo. Fermentation and maceration are kept relatively short, followed by malolactic fermentation in stainless steel, allowing the natural character of the grape to remain front and centre. Bright red berries and cherries lead the way, with a gentle savoury character and soft, rounded texture underneath.
This is Rioja for when you want freshness rather than oak, fruit rather than weight, and something you can happily pour without waiting for the right occasion. For Ireland, it makes a particularly versatile everyday red — equally comfortable with tapas and Spanish food, or with the kind of simple pasta, roast pork and grilled dishes that regularly find their way onto the dinner table.
Why we love it:
Rioja Vega Tinto shows just how enjoyable Tempranillo can be when the emphasis is firmly on fresh fruit. Juicy red berries, cherry and subtle spice come together with gentle tannins and a smooth, rounded palate, making it immediately approachable without being bland. It is a particularly useful bottle for anyone who enjoys Rioja but wants something lighter, fresher and free from the influence of extended oak ageing.

Founded in 1882, Rioja Vega is one of Rioja's historic wine names, established before the Rioja Denomination of Origin itself was created. The winery is based in Viana and works with more than 70 hectares of its own vineyards alongside carefully managed regional vineyards, combining the traditions of Rioja with a more modern, fruit-driven approach across its range. Its portfolio spans youthful wines such as this Tinto through Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva expressions, while the house continues to explore Rioja's native varieties and different vineyard sites.
