About this product

Southern Spain with a lighter touch — juicy, fruity and seriously easy to enjoy.
Molinico Loco comes from Yecla in southeastern Spain, where Monastrell is one of the region’s defining grapes. This is a sunny, dry corner of the country, but the vineyards sit at around 500 metres above sea level and the sandy, lime-rich soils help retain freshness — giving the wine plenty of ripe fruit without turning it into a heavy, overblown red.

Made by the Castaño family, Molinico Loco is all about showing the approachable side of Monastrell. The grapes are handled gently and fermented in stainless-steel tanks, allowing the natural character of the variety to take centre stage. The result is a red built around juicy cherry and plum fruit, with enough structure to work at the table while remaining remarkably easy to drink.

There is also a little story behind the name. Molinico Loco takes its name from the windmill beside the Castaño vineyards — a “crazy windmill” because, unusually, it turns on calm days rather than when the wind is blowing. It is a fitting name for a wine that takes a grape often associated with powerful Mediterranean reds and gives it a fresh, uncomplicated personality that works particularly well for everyday drinking in Ireland.

Why we love it:
Molinico Loco is the kind of Spanish red that does not need a special occasion: juicy, fresh and full of ripe cherry and plum character, with soft tannins that make it immediately approachable. It has enough substance for dinner but stays light on its feet, making it an easy bottle to open when you simply want a good, uncomplicated glass of red.

Its combination of ripe fruit and soft tannins makes Molinico Loco particularly versatile at the dinner table. It has the freshness to handle casual dishes while the generous Monastrell fruit works beautifully with grilled and roasted flavours.

Molinico Loco is made by Familia Castaño, one of the established names of Yecla and a producer closely associated with the revival and promotion of Monastrell in southeastern Spain. The family’s vineyards around Yecla are characterised by their elevation and dry Mediterranean conditions, while the Molinico Loco range focuses on an especially fresh, fruit-forward and accessible expression of the region. The name comes from the distinctive windmill beside the vineyards, known locally as the “crazy windmill” because of its unusual tendency to turn on still days.
