About this product

Three great Portuguese winemakers. One beautifully understated Dão.
The Dão does not shout for attention. Tucked into central Portugal, beneath the Serra da Estrela, it is a region where altitude, granite soils and cool mountain air naturally favour freshness and elegance over sheer power. M.O.B. Lote 3 was created specifically to capture that character — a modern interpretation of the lighter, more graceful Dão wines that inspired its three founders.

M.O.B. stands for Moreira, Olazabal & Borges: Jorge Moreira, Francisco Olazabal and Jorge Serôdio Borges, three winemakers better known for some of Portugal's most respected wines from the Douro. Their shared fascination with older Dão wines led them south to vineyards around Seia and Gouveia, where altitude and granite create conditions particularly well suited to making fresh, characterful reds.

Lote 3 brings together three of the region's classic varieties — Touriga Nacional, Alfrocheiro and Jaen. It is fermented gently in stainless steel before spending 12 months in 225-litre oak barrels, giving the wine additional depth while preserving the freshness of the fruit. For wine drinkers in Ireland accustomed to fuller Portuguese reds, this is a fascinating change of pace: elegant and finely textured rather than heavy, with ripe red and dark fruit, herbs, spice and a distinctly savoury mineral character.

Why we love it:
This is the sort of Portuguese red that rewards a little attention without demanding it. Fresh, refined and wonderfully fluid, it combines ripe fruit and subtle oak with the fine tannins and lively acidity that make the Dão such an underrated source of elegant reds.

Dão DOC

  • Touriga Nacional
  • Alfrocheiro
  • Jaen

Colour
Bright ruby with a relatively light, transparent appearance.

Nose
Ripe cherry, raspberry and blackberry mingle with violet, dried herbs, spice and subtle earthy notes.

Palate
Fresh and beautifully balanced, with concentrated red and dark fruit supported by fine, firm tannins and vibrant acidity. Twelve months in French oak add gentle vanilla, tobacco and spice, while the finish is savoury, juicy and persistent, with touches of plum, blackberry, liquorice and graphite.

Its freshness and fine tannins make Lote 3 unusually versatile at the table. It has enough depth for meat, but its acidity and relatively restrained alcohol also make it particularly good with dishes where a heavier Portuguese red could feel overpowering.

  • Roast pork with herbs
  • Duck with cherry or plum
  • Grilled chicken
  • Roast lamb
  • Mushroom and herb risotto
  • Tomato-based pasta dishes
  • Grilled vegetables
  • Portuguese-style pork and bean dishes
  • Medium-aged cheeses

For the best expression in Ireland, serve at around 15–17°C. There is no need for lengthy decanting, although 20–30 minutes of air can help the fruit, herbs and savoury notes open up.

M.O.B. — Moreira, Olazabal & Borges — is the collaboration of three prominent Portuguese winemakers: Jorge Moreira, Francisco Olazabal and Jorge Serôdio Borges. Their project began from a shared admiration for the elegance and freshness found in mature Dão wines from the 1960s and 1970s, leading them to work with vineyards around Seia and Gouveia at the foot of the Serra da Estrela. Rather than reproducing the richer, more powerful style associated with the Douro, M.O.B. focuses on expressing the Dão through freshness, precision, texture and a strong sense of place.
