Dark fruit, warm spice and a savoury Cape twist on the Rhône.
South Africa's Western Cape is capable of producing wonderfully expressive reds, and Meerestein Shiraz Mourvedre takes a classic Rhône-inspired approach. Shiraz provides the dark fruit, spice and generous structure, while Mourvèdre brings a deeper, savoury dimension to the blend. It is a combination that feels familiar, but with a distinctly South African personality.
The wine is built around Shiraz sourced from established bush-vine vineyards, with Mourvèdre adding another layer of complexity. During fermentation, the skins are regularly punched down to encourage colour, flavour and structure, resulting in a rich and dark wine packed with fruit and a distinctly savoury heart. Raspberry and redcurrant sit alongside darker fruit, with spice and subtle toast emerging as the wine opens.
Despite its generous character, this is not a heavy-handed red. The fruit keeps it approachable, while the savoury and spicy notes give it enough personality to work particularly well with grilled meats and richer dishes. For Ireland, it is an easy alternative to the usual Australian Shiraz or South American Malbec when you want a red with a little more regional character.
Why we love it:
Meerestein Shiraz Mourvedre brings plenty of flavour without becoming overly serious. Juicy raspberry and redcurrant meet darker fruit, gentle spice and a savoury finish, while the Shiraz gives the wine its generous, rounded character. It is a particularly satisfying red with food, especially anything grilled, roasted or carrying a little smoky spice.

Colour
Deep ruby red with rich purple highlights.
Nose
Ripe raspberry and redcurrant alongside darker berry fruit, with warm spice, subtle toast and savoury notes.
Palate
Generous and medium to full-bodied, with juicy red and dark fruit supported by gentle tannins. Spice and savoury notes develop across the palate, leading to a rich, rounded finish with a touch of toast and dark chocolate.
With its generous fruit, savoury character and gentle spice, Meerestein Shiraz Mourvedre is particularly well suited to hearty dishes and anything coming from the grill.
- Grilled steaks and beef
- BBQ ribs and pulled pork
- Roast lamb
- Venison and game
- Spiced sausages
- Braised beef and rich stews
- Smoked meats
- Burgers and grilled vegetables
- Mature Cheddar and hard cheeses
For an Irish table, try it with roast lamb, a good steak or a smoky barbecue-style dish, where the wine's ripe fruit and savoury edge can really come into their own. Serve at around 16–18°C and, while decanting is not essential, giving it 20–30 minutes of air will help the darker fruit and spicy character open up.

Meerestein is a Western Cape wine brand whose story is linked to the Dutch merchant ship Meerestein, built in Amsterdam in 1693 and wrecked off the South African coast in 1702; the label design references both the ship and the Dutch architectural influence found across the Cape. The range focuses on accessible wines from the Western Cape, with this Shiraz Mourvedre taking inspiration from Rhône-style blending while using established Cape vineyards and traditional techniques such as repeated punch-downs during fermentation.
