Two grapes, one very easy-drinking Cape white.
South Africa has become one of the world's most exciting homes for Chenin Blanc, and Meerestein takes that grape in a particularly approachable direction by bringing it together with Pinot Grigio. The result is a blend that combines the naturally generous, tropical character of Chenin with the lighter, crisp and refreshing personality of Pinot Grigio.
From the Western Cape, the wine opens with ripe tropical fruit, guava, melon and peach, with passionfruit adding an aromatic lift. Behind the fruit there is a lively citrus freshness, while part of the Chenin Blanc is fermented with wild yeast and kept on its lees, helping to give the wine a little extra roundness and length without making it heavy.
It is an uncomplicated wine in the best sense: fresh, fruity and immediately enjoyable, with enough character to make it more interesting than many entry-level whites. It has also built a following in Ireland over the years, making it a particularly good fit for a shop looking for an affordable New World white with something a little different about it.
Why we love it:
Meerestein is a great example of how a clever blend can give an everyday white more personality. Chenin Blanc brings the guava, peach and tropical fruit, while Pinot Grigio lifts everything with freshness and bright acidity, creating a wine that feels both juicy and crisp. It is easy-going enough for casual drinking but has enough flavour and texture to work beautifully with food.
