About this product

The Original Italian Sweet Vermouth
Some drinks become icons because they define an entire category. Martini Rosso is one of them. First created by Luigi Rossi in 1863, it was the original expression of the Martini vermouth house and remains one of the most recognisable Italian aperitivi in the world.

Made from carefully selected Italian wines and a closely guarded blend of botanicals, Rosso is characterised by its deep scarlet colour and rich, aromatic personality. Traditional Italian herbs such as artemisia, summer savoury and dittany provide its distinctive herbal backbone, while carefully balanced bittersweet botanical extracts bring depth, warmth and complexity. Its characteristic colour comes from the addition of caramel.

Compared with the softer, vanilla-led Martini Bianco, Rosso takes a darker and more robust direction. Expect fragrant herbs, warming spice, citrus and a rounded sweetness, all balanced by a pleasantly bitter edge. It is delicious served simply over ice, but its real home is arguably behind the cocktail bar, where it plays an essential role in classics such as the Negroni and Americano. A genuine Italian aperitivo staple, enjoyed by generations of drinkers in Italy and across Ireland.

Why we love it:
Martini Rosso has a character all of its own: aromatic, richly herbal and beautifully bittersweet. Its sweetness gives it an inviting, rounded feel, while the botanical complexity makes it far more interesting than a simple sweet aperitif. And when it comes to classic cocktails, few bottles are quite as indispensable.

Country of origin

Italy

Colour
Deep scarlet red with warm ruby-brown tones.

Nose
Rich and perfumed, with aromatic herbs, sweet spices and hints of orange.

Palate
Rounded sweetness combines with herbal bitterness, citrus, caramel and warming spice, finishing aromatic, bittersweet and pleasantly lingering.

Martini Rosso is a natural choice for aperitivo, served over ice with a slice of orange. For a refreshing long drink, combine it with equal parts premium tonic water and plenty of ice. It is also one of the fundamental ingredients in the classic Negroni, where its sweetness and herbal depth balance the bitterness of the Italian aperitivo bitter and the strength of gin.

Easy Home Cocktail – Classic Negroni

  • 30ml Martini Rosso
  • 30ml gin
  • 30ml Italian bitter aperitivo
  • Orange slice or orange peel

Pour all three ingredients into a rocks glass filled with ice and stir gently until chilled and properly combined. Garnish with a slice of orange or a twist of orange peel. Equal parts, no complicated techniques and a wonderfully balanced result: one of Italy's most enduring cocktails, with Martini Rosso providing its signature bittersweet character.

The Martini story began in 1863 in Pessione, near Turin, when entrepreneur Alessandro Martini joined forces with herbalist and master blender Luigi Rossi and accountant Teofilo Sola. Rossi's original vermouth recipe established the foundations of a brand that would become synonymous with Italian aperitivo culture. More than 160 years later, Martini continues to draw on its Piedmontese heritage, combining Italian winemaking traditions with carefully selected botanicals to create some of the world's best-known vermouths and aperitivi.
