The ultimate seafood white — crisp, saline and made for oysters.
Some wines seem almost designed for a particular place and a particular plate. Muscadet Sèvre et Maine is one of them. Grown in the western Loire around Nantes, where the vineyards sit under the influence of the nearby Atlantic, this classic French white is made from Melon de Bourgogne, a grape that produces wines with bright acidity, delicate fruit and a wonderfully fresh, mineral character.
LaCheteau's Muscadet takes that natural freshness a step further with sur lie ageing. Rather than being bottled immediately after fermentation, the wine remains in contact with its fine lees, giving it additional texture and a subtle sense of richness while preserving the lively character that makes Muscadet so refreshing. Expect citrus, white fruit and delicate floral notes, followed by a clean, lightly saline finish that seems to echo the Atlantic coast.
It is a style that deserves much more attention outside France. In Ireland, where seafood is such a natural part of the food culture, this is an especially useful bottle to have chilled and ready to go. It is light, dry and refreshing enough for an aperitif, but its real strength appears when it meets oysters, mussels, prawns or simply grilled fish.
Why we love it:
There is something wonderfully honest about Muscadet: it doesn't need to shout to make an impression. LaCheteau combines lively citrus and delicate white-fruit flavours with the subtle texture of lees ageing, finishing with the fresh, mineral and faintly saline character that makes the style so distinctive. It is refreshing, seriously food-friendly and one of those wines that can make a simple plate of seafood feel instantly more special.

Muscadet Sèvre et Maine AOC
- Melon de Bourgogne
Colour
Pale lemon with a subtle golden hue.
Nose
Delicate white flowers, citrus and fresh melon, with subtle mineral notes.
Palate
Crisp, dry and refreshing, with lively acidity and flavours of citrus and white fruit. The time spent on fine lees adds a gentle roundness and texture, while a subtle saline-mineral character carries through to a clean, mouth-watering finish.
Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Sur Lie has earned its reputation as one of France's great seafood wines, thanks to its combination of bright acidity, delicate fruit and subtle saline character. It is particularly good at cutting through richer seafood while allowing the natural flavours of the ingredients to remain centre stage.
- Oysters and fresh shellfish
- Mussels and clams
- Prawns, crab and lobster
- Grilled or baked white fish
- Seafood salads
- Sushi and sashimi
- Fish with lemon or light butter sauces
- Goat's cheese
- Light salads and vegetable dishes
For an Irish table, it is hard to beat alongside fresh oysters, mussels or simply grilled fish, making it a particularly natural choice when you want a crisp white with seafood. Serve well chilled at around 8–10°C; decanting is not necessary, although opening the bottle a few minutes before serving will allow its delicate fruit and mineral character to develop in the glass.

LaCheteau is a Loire wine producer and négociant based at Château du Cléray in Vallet, in the heart of Muscadet country, and is part of Les Grands Chais de France (LGCF). Its portfolio covers a broad range of Loire appellations, while its position in the Nantais gives it a particularly strong connection with Muscadet and the Melon de Bourgogne grape. The producer's wines aim to express the character of their respective Loire terroirs in an accessible style, with this Sèvre et Maine Sur Lie offering a classic combination of freshness, minerality and gentle lees-derived texture.
