A Rare Taste of Achill Island.
There are plenty of Irish whiskeys on the shelf these days. IrishAmerican 10 Year Old is something rather different. Born from the ambitions of the IrishAmerican Whiskey Company on Achill Island, this small-batch whiskey represents an earlier chapter in the modern Irish whiskey revival — and one that is becoming increasingly difficult to find.
Crafted using malted barley and grain, the 10 Year Old is matured in first-fill American bourbon casks, with the producer describing it as a rich, full-bodied whiskey with a floral character and gentle cinnamon spice. It is also non-chill filtered, allowing more of the natural texture and character of the whiskey to remain in the bottle.
What makes it particularly intriguing today is its provenance. IrishAmerican was developed by the family behind what became Achill Island Distillers, on Ireland's Wild Atlantic western edge. Before the distillery's own whiskey range came fully into its own, IrishAmerican helped establish the family's name — making this 10 Year Old a fascinating piece of modern Irish whiskey history as well as a genuinely enjoyable bottle to drink.
Why we love it:
This is the sort of Irish whiskey that rewards anyone who enjoys looking beyond the obvious names. Ten years in first-fill bourbon casks give it proper maturity without burying the underlying whiskey, while the combination of dark fruit, floral notes, wood and gentle spice makes it considerably more characterful than its modest 40% ABV might suggest. Add the Achill Island connection and increasing scarcity, and this becomes a particularly appealing bottle for both Irish whiskey enthusiasts and collectors of the less familiar.
Ireland
Colour
Rich golden amber with a warm copper hue.
Nose
Initially rich and woody, with notes of polished oak and leather followed by dark dried fruits. Floral tones sit underneath, giving the whiskey an inviting lift.
Palate
Smooth and full-bodied, opening with blackberry and raspberry before moving towards raisins and dates.
This is a whiskey to sip rather than rush. Start with it neat in a tulip-shaped whiskey glass and give it a few minutes to open, allowing the dried fruit, oak and floral notes to come forward. A few drops of room-temperature water can soften the alcohol and reveal more of the sweeter honey, vanilla and cinnamon character.
For a more relaxed serve, it works beautifully over a single large ice cube, particularly if you enjoy a slightly cooler, slower-drinking whiskey. And while it has enough character to stand up in a cocktail, a simple Irish Whiskey Old Fashioned is the way to go — bourbon-cask sweetness, dried fruit and spice make a natural match for orange and bitters.
Serve neat at around 18–20°C for the fullest expression.
Easy Home Cocktail
IrishAmerican Old Fashioned

- 5ml sugar syrup
- 2 dashes Angostura Aromatic Bitters
- Orange peel
- Large ice cube
Add the whiskey, syrup and bitters to a mixing glass filled with ice. Stir well, strain over a large cube and express an orange peel over the top.
The result is a richer, fruit-forward Old Fashioned that lets the whiskey's mature oak and dried-fruit character remain firmly in the spotlight.

IrishAmerican Whiskey was established by the McKay family and is closely connected with Achill Island, Ireland's spectacular Atlantic island on the west coast. The family developed IrishAmerican Whiskey before the emergence of their own Achill Island distillery, creating a range that helped establish the business in the international Irish whiskey market. The 10 Year Old became its flagship mature expression, earning awards including Double Gold, Silver and Best in Show at the WSWA awards, as well as recognition at the San Francisco Spirit Awards.
