A little-known Slovak grape with a seriously aromatic personality.
There are wines you buy because you know exactly what they will taste like, and then there are wines that make you discover something new. ELESKO Pálava “1” belongs firmly in the second category. Made from Pálava, a grape rarely encountered outside Central Europe, it is wonderfully expressive from the first pour — floral, exotic, lightly spicy and full of ripe stone-fruit character, yet completely dry on the palate.
Pálava has its roots in Moravia, where it was developed as a crossing of Traminer and Müller-Thurgau. It inherited the perfume and spice of Traminer, but retains a fresher, lighter side that makes it much more versatile at the table. ELESKO's interpretation comes from their Zoya vineyard in the Small Carpathian region of Slovakia, where the grape finds an ideal home in the warm continental climate. Cold maceration and cool fermentation help preserve those beautiful aromatics rather than turning them into something heavy or overly perfumed.
The result is a wine with plenty to talk about. Peach, mango and passionfruit sit alongside rose, grapefruit and delicate herbal notes, while a refreshing line of acidity keeps everything moving. There is a gentle suggestion of sweetness in the fruit, but the wine itself is dry, making Pálava “1” considerably more versatile than its exotic aromas might initially suggest. For Ireland, this is precisely the kind of bottle that can turn a dinner into a conversation — a premium Slovak discovery for anyone who has already worked their way through Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and the usual suspects.
Why we love it:
Pálava “1” is wonderfully different without being difficult, combining the perfume of an aromatic grape with the freshness and dryness that make a wine genuinely enjoyable at the table. It feels like the kind of bottle you open for the first time out of curiosity and end up remembering because it tastes unlike anything else in the fridge.

Colour
Bright, clear golden yellow.
Nose
Intensely aromatic, with ripe peach, mango and passionfruit joined by rose petals, citrus and delicate hints of herbs and spice.
Palate
Dry and lively, with generous tropical and stone-fruit flavours balanced by refreshing acidity. Pink grapefruit, floral notes and subtle spice carry through to a long, aromatic finish.
The aromatic character makes Pálava particularly exciting with food that brings herbs, spice or a little sweetness to the plate, while its freshness gives it enough versatility for seafood and lighter dishes too.
