Dark, powerful and wonderfully unusual — Slovakia’s answer to the curious red-wine drinker.
Some grape varieties have names you know before you ever taste them. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah. And then there is Alibernet — a much more mysterious character, born from a crossing of Alicante Bouschet and Cabernet Sauvignon in Ukraine and now cultivated in parts of Central Europe. ELESKO takes this unusual variety and turns it into a rich, deeply coloured red that feels familiar enough to enjoy immediately, but different enough to make you take notice.
The grapes come from ELESKO’s Zoya vineyard in the Modranský district of Slovakia’s Small Carpathian region. This is not a shy wine: the colour is intensely violet-red and the aromas move into dark forest fruits, blackcurrant and blackberry, with touches of sour cherry, white pepper and the distinctive hint of black poppy that appears in descriptions of Alibernet from this region. Twelve months in large oak barrels add a gentle smoky and chocolatey dimension without burying the fruit.
What makes it particularly interesting is the way the wine manages to feel both powerful and polished. The fruit is generous, the tannins are substantial but integrated, and the oak sits more like a frame around the wine than a layer painted over it. For Ireland, this is a bottle for the drinker who has already explored the familiar red grapes and wants something with a genuine sense of discovery — a Slovak red with the structure to stand alongside serious food.
Why we love it:
Alibernet is a proper conversation starter: dark, concentrated and structured, but with enough freshness and fruit to stop it becoming heavy. The combination of blackcurrant, forest fruit, subtle oak and dark chocolate gives it the familiarity of a classic full-bodied red while the grape itself makes the experience something completely different.

Malokarpatská
- Alibernet
Colour
Deep, almost opaque violet-red with pronounced concentration.
Nose
Dark forest berries, blackcurrant and blackberry, with sour cherry, white pepper and subtle smoky oak.
Palate
Full-bodied and robust, with generous dark fruit, well-integrated tannins and a gentle oak character. Blackberry and blackcurrant lead into hints of dark chocolate and a long, savoury finish.
This is a wine that appreciates food with some substance behind it. Its dark fruit, tannic structure and gentle oak make it particularly well suited to grilled or slow-cooked meats, rich sauces and mature cheeses.
- Beef flank steak or ribeye
- Roast venison and other game
- Slow-cooked beef or beef cheeks
- Lamb with rosemary and garlic
- Grilled or roasted duck
- Rich mushroom dishes
- Black-olive tapenade with crusty bread
- Mature hard cheeses
For an Irish table, this is a natural partner for steak, roast beef, venison or mature farmhouse cheeses; serve at 15–17°C, and decant for around 30–60 minutes to allow the wine to open fully.

The estate owns around 110 hectares of vineyards in the Malokarpatská region and combines contemporary winemaking with a strong emphasis on local varieties and distinctive vineyard sites. The Alibernet “1” belongs to the winery’s Premium portfolio and comes from the Zoya vineyard in Vištuk, where ELESKO grows the variety specifically for this powerful, distinctive expression.
