About this product

Juicy. Fresh. Alpine red with a vibrant edge.
Domäne Wachau Blauer Zweigelt “Terrassen” offers a beautifully fresh and modern expression of Austria’s most widely planted red grape. Crafted by Domäne Wachau, this wine captures the lighter, more elegant side of red winemaking in Wachau — a region far better known for its whites, yet increasingly exciting for its precise, terroir-driven reds.

Once again, the story begins on the Terrassen. These steep, stone-built vineyard sites, carved into the hills above the Danube, are not just visually striking — they play a crucial role in shaping the wine. The terraces store warmth during the day, helping red varieties like Zweigelt achieve full ripeness in a relatively cool climate, while cool night air preserves freshness and acidity. The soils — a mix of gneiss, granite, and loess — add a subtle mineral edge, giving structure and definition to what is naturally a fruit-driven grape.

Blauer Zweigelt, a crossing of St. Laurent and Blaufränkisch, is known for its juicy red fruit and soft tannins. In Wachau, it takes on a more refined and lifted character — less about power, more about purity and drinkability.

In the glass, it shows a bright ruby colour with youthful vibrancy. Aromas are fresh and inviting: sour cherry, raspberry, and redcurrant, with delicate hints of spice, pepper, and a touch of earthiness. It’s expressive without being heavy — a red that feels alive and energetic.

On the palate, it is light to medium-bodied, with juicy red berry fruit at its core. The tannins are soft and supple, while a line of fresh acidity keeps everything lively and balanced. There’s a subtle savoury note and gentle spice that add complexity, leading into a clean, refreshing finish. It’s a red that prioritises drinkability, without losing its sense of character.

For wine lovers in Ireland, this is a brilliant alternative to lighter Pinot Noir or Gamay styles — offering freshness, versatility, and a slightly different flavour profile. It’s ideal for casual dining, slightly chilled enjoyment, or simply when you want a red that feels bright and easy to drink.

Why we love it:
Juicy, fresh, and effortlessly drinkable. Bright red fruit, soft tannins, and a lively finish make it a perfect everyday red with a twist.
