About this product

Powerful. Layered. The pinnacle of Grüner Veltliner.
Domäne Wachau Grüner Veltliner “Smaragd Terrassen” represents the most profound and age-worthy expression of the region — a wine where power meets precision, and richness is held in perfect balance by freshness. Crafted by Domäne Wachau, this is Grüner Veltliner at its most complete, shaped by the dramatic terraces and unique climate of the Wachau.

The Terrassen once again play a defining role. These steep, stone-built vineyards force vines to struggle, rooting deep into ancient soils of gneiss and granite. The combination of intense sunlight, stored heat from the terraces, and cooling alpine air allows grapes to achieve full ripeness while retaining structure and acidity. The result is fruit of remarkable concentration and complexity — the foundation of wines like Smaragd.

“Smaragd” is the highest classification in Wachau, reserved for the ripest, most powerful wines. Named after the emerald-green lizards that bask on the sun-warmed terraces, it signals depth, intensity, and ageing potential. Yet, despite this richness, the best examples — like this one — remain precise and beautifully balanced.

In the glass, it shows a deeper golden hue with bright reflections. The aromatics are layered and expressive: ripe pear, yellow apple, and stone fruit unfold alongside white pepper, herbs, and a pronounced mineral note. There’s a sense of maturity and depth, yet everything remains lifted and defined.

On the palate, it is full-bodied and richly textured, yet never heavy. Ripe orchard and stone fruit flavours are supported by a firm structure, vibrant acidity, and a deep mineral core. The classic Grüner spice — that signature white pepper note — weaves through the wine, adding complexity. The finish is long, powerful, and savoury, with a lingering mineral edge that speaks clearly of its origin.

For wine lovers in Ireland, this is Grüner Veltliner at its most serious and rewarding — a wine that can be enjoyed now for its richness or cellared to develop further complexity. It’s a perfect choice for those seeking a premium white with both depth and elegance, offering a compelling alternative to richer Chardonnay or white Burgundy styles.

Why we love it:
