Precise. Mineral. Elegantly driven.
Domäne Wachau Riesling “Federspiel Terrassen” is a beautifully focused expression of one of the world’s great white grape varieties, shaped by the dramatic landscapes of the Wachau. Crafted by Domäne Wachau, this wine captures the tension and purity that define the region — where steep stone terraces, ancient soils, and a unique climate come together to create wines of remarkable clarity and finesse.
The Terrassen are at the heart of this wine’s identity. These centuries-old, hand-built stone terraces climb the hillsides above the Danube, forcing vines to dig deep into poor, rocky soils of gneiss and granite. This struggle produces low yields but highly concentrated fruit, while the terraces themselves store heat during the day and release it at night, aiding slow, even ripening. Combined with cool alpine air, this creates the perfect conditions for Riesling — a grape that thrives on precision, acidity, and site expression.
As a Federspiel, this wine sits in Wachau’s middle tier — offering more structure and depth than lighter styles, yet retaining vibrancy and drinkability. It’s often considered the sweet spot for Riesling lovers: expressive, mineral, and incredibly versatile.
In the glass, it shows a pale straw colour with green reflections. The aromatics are lifted and precise — lime, green apple, white peach, and citrus blossom, underpinned by a clear mineral streak. Compared to Grüner Veltliner, Riesling here leans more into purity and linearity, with less spice and more focus on citrus and stone fruit.
On the palate, it is taut, vibrant, and beautifully structured. Bright citrus and stone fruit flavours are carried by crisp acidity and a pronounced mineral backbone, giving the wine energy and length. There’s a sense of tension here — everything feels tightly woven and purposeful. The finish is dry, clean, and long, with a lingering stony freshness that is unmistakably Wachau.
For wine lovers in Ireland, this is a fantastic introduction to dry Austrian Riesling — offering precision and freshness with a refined, mineral edge. It’s a step up in complexity, perfect for those looking to explore beyond fruit-forward whites and discover a more terroir-driven style.
Why we love it:
Linear, mineral, and beautifully precise. Bright citrus, crisp acidity, and a stony backbone make this a refined, food-friendly Riesling.
