About this product

Structured. Mineral. A true taste of the terraces.
From the dramatic slopes of the Danube Valley, Domäne Wachau crafts this Grüner Veltliner “Federspiel Terrassen” — a wine that sits at the heart of Wachau’s quality hierarchy. It’s a step up in depth and structure from lighter styles, yet still defined by freshness, precision, and that unmistakable mineral backbone that makes the region so special.

To understand this wine, you have to understand the Terrassen. These are the steep, hand-built stone terraces that carve their way along the Wachau’s hillsides — some dating back centuries. Too steep for machinery, they are worked entirely by hand, with vines rooted deep into ancient soils of gneiss and granite. These terraces capture sunlight, retain heat, and create a unique microclimate, allowing grapes to ripen slowly while preserving acidity and complexity. The result is wines with incredible purity, structure, and a distinct sense of place.

“Federspiel” itself refers to a classification within Wachau, indicating a medium-bodied style — more concentration than the lightest “Steinfeder” wines, but not as powerful as “Smaragd.” It’s often considered the perfect balance: expressive, structured, and highly versatile.

In the glass, it shows a pale gold colour with green reflections. The aromatics are more layered than the “Selection” level — ripe pear, apple, and citrus unfold alongside white pepper, herbs, and a pronounced mineral note. There’s a quiet intensity here, a sense of depth without heaviness.

On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied and beautifully structured. Orchard fruit and citrus are framed by vibrant acidity and a firm mineral core, giving the wine both energy and length. The signature Grüner spice — that subtle white pepper note — adds complexity, while the finish is dry, precise, and lingering, with a savoury edge that speaks clearly of its terroir.

For wine lovers in Ireland, this is where Grüner Veltliner really begins to show its depth. It offers freshness and drinkability, but with an added layer of structure and complexity that makes it ideal for food. A refined, versatile white that bridges the gap between easy enjoyment and serious wine.

Why we love it:
Classic Wachau Grüner with depth and precision. Terraced vineyards bring minerality and structure, while the Federspiel style keeps it fresh and balanced.
