Right Bank Bordeaux at its most inviting — ripe, silky and unmistakably Saint-Émilion.
Saint-Émilion has a very different personality from the Cabernet-dominated Médoc. Here on Bordeaux's Right Bank, Merlot takes centre stage, producing wines that tend to be rounder, softer and more immediately generous, with Cabernet Franc adding freshness and structure. Château Le Barry is a particularly approachable example of this classic style, combining ripe red fruit with gentle spice and the subtle savoury character that makes Saint-Émilion such a dependable food wine.
The château's vineyards are located on the Right Bank of the Dordogne, where clay and limestone soils provide an ideal environment for Merlot. The blend is predominantly Merlot, supported by Cabernet Franc and a smaller proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon, creating a wine that has plenty of fruit and texture without becoming overly heavy. The estate follows certified organic farming practices, while fermentation takes place in stainless steel to preserve the freshness and character of the fruit.
In the glass, Château Le Barry shows the softer, more generous side of Bordeaux: ripe berries, plum and cherry sit alongside vanilla, sweet spice and gentle balsamic notes. The tannins are present but well integrated, giving the wine enough structure for a proper dinner while keeping it smooth and accessible. For Bordeaux lovers in Ireland, it is a very good way to experience Saint-Émilion character without having to venture into the prices of the appellation's famous classified estates.
Why we love it:This is exactly the sort of Bordeaux that is easy to appreciate from the first glass. The ripe Merlot fruit gives it a soft, generous feel, while Cabernet Franc brings freshness and a little extra definition, resulting in a polished red that feels classic without being austere.

Colour
Deep ruby-garnet with youthful violet reflections.
Nose
Ripe red berries and plum mingle with cherry, vanilla, sweet spice and subtle balsamic notes.
Palate
Soft and rounded, with generous red and dark fruit supported by smooth, integrated tannins and refreshing acidity. Hints of spice, liquorice and gentle oak add complexity, leading to a long, fruit-driven finish.
The combination of ripe fruit, gentle tannins and fresh acidity makes Château Le Barry particularly versatile at the table. It has enough structure for red meat but is soft enough to work beautifully with poultry, mushrooms and richer vegetarian dishes.

For the best expression in Ireland, serve at around 16–18°C. There is no need for lengthy decanting, but giving the wine 20–30 minutes of air before serving will help its fruit, spice and balsamic notes open up.

Château Le Barry is a small independent Saint-Émilion producer whose vineyards cover around four hectares on the Right Bank of the Dordogne. The estate works with the principal Bordeaux varieties — Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, alongside a small amount of Malbec — and follows certified organic viticulture. Some of its vines date back to the 1960s, while the winemaking combines stainless-steel fermentation with careful maturation designed to preserve the fruit and balance the influence of oak. The result is a style of Saint-Émilion that focuses on generosity, freshness and accessibility rather than excessive extraction.
