French Chardonnay with a little Burgundy pedigree and an everyday price tag.
Chardonnay may be one of the world's most familiar grapes, but France remains the place where its personality can change dramatically from one region to another. Héritage du Conseiller takes that idea and makes it wonderfully accessible, combining Chardonnay from the south and west of France with fruit from the grape's historic Burgundian home to create a wine that is fresh, rounded and quietly elegant.
Bouchard Aîné & Fils has been working with Chardonnay for generations, and this wine shows the house's knack for making a varietal expression that feels polished without becoming overly serious. The grapes are harvested during the cooler hours of the night to preserve freshness, while individual parcels are vinified separately before the wine spends time on its fine lees. A small proportion is matured under wood, adding just enough structure and richness without drowning the fruit.
The result is a Chardonnay with ripe orchard and exotic fruit, floral notes and a lovely rounded texture, balanced by enough freshness to keep it lively. For Chardonnay drinkers in Ireland, it occupies a particularly useful middle ground: richer and more textured than a very simple unoaked white, but much more approachable — and considerably less expensive — than reaching for Burgundy.
Why we love it:
This is a very well-judged French Chardonnay for the money, bringing together ripe fruit, gentle richness and refreshing acidity without becoming overly buttery or oaky. It has enough finesse to feel special at the table, while remaining relaxed enough for a weeknight glass.
France
- Chardonnay
Colour
Bright straw yellow with a clear, luminous appearance.
Nose
Generous and inviting, with nectarine, white and exotic fruits alongside delicate acacia blossom.
Palate
Round and elegant, with ripe tropical fruit and orchard-fruit flavours balanced by fresh acidity. Fine lees ageing brings additional texture, while the subtle influence of wood adds gentle structure rather than overt oak. The finish is long, clean and pleasantly fresh.
Its balance of freshness and roundness makes this an exceptionally flexible Chardonnay. It can handle lighter seafood beautifully, but also has enough texture for richer fish, grilled meats and creamy dishes.
- Grilled prawns and shellfish
- Salmon with lemon and herbs
- Grilled sea bass
- Roast or grilled chicken
- Chicken in a light cream sauce
- Mixed salads with soft cheese
- Goat's cheese
- Grilled vegetables
- Creamy pasta dishes
For the best expression in Ireland, serve at around 11–13°C. There is no need to decant; simply give the wine a few minutes in the glass to allow its fruit, floral notes and gentle texture to open up.

Bouchard Aîné & Fils is a historic Beaune wine house with roots going back to 1750, and its name is closely connected with the development of Burgundy's wine trade. The house takes its name from the Bouchard family and, in particular, Paul Bouchard, the fifth generation of the family, who played an important role in the technical and commercial development of the region. Today, Bouchard Aîné & Fils combines that Burgundian heritage with a broader portfolio of French wines, using its expertise in blending and vinification to produce accessible wines alongside its Burgundy appellations.
