A taste of Italian tradition, wrapped in a little piece of history.
Some products have a charm that goes well beyond what is inside the packaging. Calvi's Traditional Vintage Tin is one of them: a beautifully nostalgic recreation of the original olive oil can used by Giuseppe Calvi in the 1920s, bringing a little piece of Italian food history straight into the modern kitchen.
But this is certainly not a case of style over substance. Inside the distinctive 500ml tin is 100% Italian extra virgin olive oil, obtained through cold extraction and selected by Calvi for its delicate, balanced character. It is a genuine everyday Italian staple: approachable, versatile and full of the understated charm that makes good olive oil such an essential part of Mediterranean cooking.
Produced by Giuseppe Calvi & C. in Imperia Oneglia, on the western Ligurian coast, this oil reflects a region where olive cultivation and the art of producing quality olive oil have long been part of everyday life. Liguria is particularly associated with the Taggiasca olive, celebrated for the delicate, elegant oils it can produce. While this particular vintage tin is made with 100% Italian olives rather than being presented as a single-variety selection, it carries the same sense of regional heritage and attention to quality.
The oil's delicate and balanced profile makes it wonderfully versatile. It is equally at home drizzled over fresh vegetables, used to finish a bowl of pasta, spooned over grilled fish or simply enjoyed with good bread. Rather than overpowering a dish, it brings a gentle richness that allows the ingredients to shine.
For anyone in Ireland who appreciates authentic Italian ingredients, this is a lovely pantry essential with an extra touch of personality. The traditional tin makes it particularly attractive on a kitchen shelf or dining table, while also offering practical protection from light — one of olive oil's natural enemies.
A little nostalgic, unmistakably Italian and made to be enjoyed every day, Calvi's Traditional Vintage Tin is a reminder that some of the simplest pleasures in the kitchen are also the most enduring.
Why we love it:
We love the combination of genuine Italian quality and old-fashioned charm. The vintage tin is a beautiful nod to Calvi's history, but the real appeal is the oil itself: a 100% Italian extra virgin with a delicate, balanced character that works across so many different dishes. It is the kind of bottle — or, in this case, tin — that you will happily keep within reach of the cooker or on the table, ready to bring a little Mediterranean flavour to everyday meals.

The story of Giuseppe Calvi & C. began in 1921 in Imperia Oneglia, on the Ligurian coast of north-western Italy. Founded by Giuseppe Calvi, the company grew from a local olive oil business into an established producer and selector of Italian extra virgin olive oils, while retaining its family identity.
Today, the business is managed by Gianni and Luca Calvi, who continue the work started by their grandfather. Its roots remain firmly connected to the Ligurian olive-growing tradition, particularly the celebrated Taggiasca olive and the distinctive oils of the western Riviera.
Calvi combines this heritage with modern production facilities and a wider range of Italian olive oils and traditional regional specialities. The company's vintage tin is a particularly charming expression of that history: a faithful reproduction of the can used by Giuseppe Calvi in the 1920s, bringing the brand's original packaging back to life.
