About this product

The juicy side of French Malbec — dark, soft and effortlessly drinkable.
Malbec may have become synonymous with Argentina, but its story began in France. Le Grand Noir takes the grape back to the sunny vineyards of Southern France and gives it a modern, approachable personality: generous plum and cherry fruit, a touch of violet and spice, and enough structure to keep everything interesting without making the wine feel heavy.

The grapes come from selected low-yielding vineyards around Homps and Pépieux in the Minervois, where Mediterranean sunshine is tempered by the influence of the Black Mountains. The combination of different soils and elevations is central to the Le Grand Noir approach, allowing the fruit to become ripe and expressive while retaining freshness. The wine is fermented after a period of cold soak, with around two weeks on the skins before pressing.

What makes this Malbec particularly appealing is the balance between two familiar styles. It has the plush, fruity appeal that has made Argentine Malbec so popular, but with a subtler, more structured and mineral edge that brings it back to its French roots. For wine drinkers in Ireland, it is an easy way to enjoy Malbec from a completely different angle — generous enough for everyday drinking, but distinctly French in character.

Why we love it:
A wonderfully uncomplicated Malbec that gets the balance just right between ripe fruit and freshness. It is soft, plummy and generous, with just enough spice and structure to stop it becoming one-dimensional — exactly the kind of bottle that disappears rather quickly around the dinner table.

Country of origin

France

Pays d'Oc IGP

  • Malbec

Colour
Deep, intense ruby-purple.

Nose
Plush plum and ripe cherry lead the nose, followed by blueberry, violet and subtle spice.

Palate
Soft and fruit-driven, with generous plum, cherry and dark berry flavours supported by gentle tannins and refreshing acidity. A subtle mineral character adds definition, while the clean, juicy finish keeps the wine lively and highly drinkable.

This is a Malbec made for full-flavoured food. Its ripe fruit and gentle tannins work naturally with grilled meat, but the freshness makes it surprisingly versatile with everything from burgers to Mediterranean and international dishes.

  • Grilled steak or beef
  • Burgers
  • Barbecued ribs
  • Roast lamb
  • Sausages and grilled pork
  • Beef or mushroom pasta
  • Ratatouille and grilled vegetables
  • Hearty bean or lentil dishes
  • Mature and hard cheeses

For the best expression in Ireland, serve at around 16–18°C. There is no need to decant; simply open and pour, although 15–20 minutes in the glass will allow the plum, cherry and violet character to become more expressive.

Le Grand Noir was created in the ancient wine country of Southern France as a deliberately modern interpretation of French wine, bringing together traditional French varieties and a more accessible New World sensibility. The project was developed by winemaker Hugh Ryman, wine writer Robert Joseph and designer Kevin Shaw, working alongside family grape-growers in the Languedoc. Their philosophy is built around selecting fruit from different soils, altitudes and microclimates and blending them to create wines that are expressive and food-friendly without being overly powerful or dominated by oak.
