About this product

Classic Left Bank Bordeaux without the grand cru price tag.
Haut-Médoc is where Bordeaux's Left Bank really shows its character: Cabernet-led wines, gravelly soils, Atlantic influence and a style built around structure, freshness and savoury complexity. Château Cap L'Ousteau offers an accessible introduction to that world, bringing together the classic Bordeaux grapes in a medium-bodied red that feels distinctly Médoc without demanding a special occasion.

The wine comes from the Lamarque area of the Haut-Médoc, between the famous appellations of Margaux and Saint-Julien. This is an excellent location for producing approachable Left Bank Bordeaux, with the Atlantic climate helping preserve freshness while the region's gravelly and mixed soils provide the structure associated with the Médoc. Cap L'Ousteau has also been presented as the second wine of Château du Cartillon, giving it a useful connection to a long-established Haut-Médoc estate.

In the glass, expect ripe blackcurrant and plum alongside red-fruit notes, subtle spice and a touch of oak. The Cabernet brings structure and freshness, while Merlot softens the edges and gives the wine its generous fruit character. It is the kind of classic Bordeaux that makes a particularly good choice for Ireland when you want something more traditional and savoury than an international fruit-forward red, but without moving into expensive territory.

Why we love it:

This is Bordeaux doing exactly what Bordeaux does best: combining ripe fruit with freshness, structure and a quietly savoury character. It has enough Cabernet backbone to feel unmistakably Left Bank, while the Merlot keeps it rounded and approachable, making it a very dependable bottle for a proper dinner.

Country of origin

France

Haut-Médoc AOC

  • Merlot
  • Cabernet Sauvignon

Colour
Deep ruby with garnet reflections.

Nose
Blackcurrant and ripe plum are joined by red berries, subtle vanilla, spice and a gentle earthy note.

Palate
Medium-bodied and dry, with generous blackcurrant and plum supported by refreshing acidity and fine, structured tannins. Subtle oak, spice and a touch of liquorice add complexity, leading to a savoury, persistent finish.

This is a classic food wine, with the tannins and acidity particularly well suited to rich, savoury dishes. It is at its best alongside red meat, slow-cooked dishes and mature cheeses, where the wine's structure can really come into its own.

  • Roast beef
  • Steak and chips
  • Roast lamb
  • Beef stew and slow-cooked beef
  • Duck
  • Game and game pies
  • Roast veal
  • Grilled sausages
  • Mushroom and beef dishes
  • Mature hard cheeses

For the best expression in Ireland, serve at around 16–18°C. There is no need for prolonged decanting, particularly with a younger bottle, but 20–30 minutes of air will help the fruit and savoury notes open up.

Château Cap L'Ousteau is associated with the Société Fermière des Grands Crus de France and is situated in the Haut-Médoc wine country around Lamarque. The wine has appeared across multiple vintages and has been recognised in competitions and major wine guides, while its position as the second wine of Château du Cartillon gives it a connection to an established Haut-Médoc property. The style is deliberately classic rather than showy: ripe Bordeaux fruit, Cabernet structure, refreshing acidity and restrained oak, making it a particularly accessible expression of the Left Bank.
