About this product

A little piece of the Médoc — classic, elegant and quietly impressive.
There is something wonderfully romantic about a bottle of Bordeaux. Behind the grand names and famous appellations are hundreds of smaller estates making wines that tell the story of the region just as honestly. Château Haut-Plantey Declercq is one of them: a small Haut-Médoc property near Listrac, producing a traditional Bordeaux red with the depth, elegance and sense of place that make the Médoc so enduring.

The estate has been in the hands of the Roskam family since 2005, and its vineyards sit in the northern part of the Haut-Médoc, close to some of Bordeaux's better-known names. Here, Cabernet Sauvignon brings the classic blackcurrant character and structure associated with the Left Bank, while Merlot adds softness and ripe fruit. The result is a wine that feels traditional without being austere — the sort of Bordeaux that rewards a good meal and a little time in the glass.

Open a bottle and the first impression is one of dark fruit: cassis, blackberry and ripe plum, followed by cedar, spice and a gentle earthy character. There is real richness here, but it is balanced by freshness and fine tannins rather than weight. For wine drinkers in Ireland, this is a lovely opportunity to step beyond the familiar Bordeaux labels and discover the charm of a smaller Haut-Médoc château.

Why we love it:
This is the kind of Bordeaux that makes a dinner feel like a proper occasion without becoming overly formal. The dark fruit is generous, the tannins are polished and there is just enough cedar, spice and earthiness to remind you that this is unmistakably Médoc.

Haut-Médoc AOC

  • Merlot
  • Cabernet Sauvignon

Colour
Deep ruby-garnet with a mature, vibrant hue.

Nose
Blackcurrant, blackberry and ripe plum mingle with cedar, spice and subtle earthy notes.

Palate
Rich and rounded, with generous dark fruit balanced by fresh acidity and beautifully integrated tannins. Notes of cassis, plum and spice carry through to a savoury, elegant finish with a gentle earthy complexity.

This is a wine that really comes alive around the dinner table. Its combination of dark fruit, freshness and polished tannins makes it particularly good with roasted and grilled meats, but it has enough elegance to work beautifully with slower, more savoury dishes too.

For the best expression in Ireland, serve at around 16–18°C. A little air will help the wine open up, so 20–30 minutes in a decanter or simply in the glass is recommended, particularly when enjoying a younger bottle.

Château Haut-Plantey is a small Haut-Médoc estate with a more personal story than many of Bordeaux's famous names. The property has been owned by the Roskam family since 2005 and is located close to Listrac in the Médoc, producing wines that combine the traditional Cabernet-led character of the Left Bank with a generous, approachable style. Its wines have received recognition from critics, including a 90-point Wine Enthusiast review for the 2016 vintage, which highlighted the estate's rich black fruit, structure and ripe tannins. It is a good example of why Bordeaux is about much more than the famous classified châteaux: smaller properties can offer plenty of character, history and genuine sense of place.
