O’Hara’s Irish Red is one of the beers that helped put modern Irish craft brewing on the map. Brewed by Carlow Brewing Company, the independent family-owned brewery behind the O’Hara’s name, it was among the brewery’s very first beers when they began brewing in 1996. Originally known as Moling’s Red Ale, it became O’Hara’s Irish Red and has remained a defining expression of the traditional Irish red ale style ever since.
There is something wonderfully understated about a great Irish Red. Rather than relying on aggressive hopping or high alcohol, the style is built around malt, balance, and drinkability. About the producer
O’Hara’s is the brewing name of Carlow Brewing Company, an independent Irish family-owned brewery established in 1996. Based in Bagenalstown in County Carlow, the brewery was founded during a period when Ireland's beer market was overwhelmingly dominated by large international producers. Its ambition was simple but significant: to bring traditionally brewed, flavourful beer back to the Irish table.
The brewery's first beers were launched in 1998, including O’Hara’s Irish Red, originally brewed under the name Moling’s Red Ale. From those early beginnings, Carlow Brewing Company became one of the pioneers of Ireland's modern craft brewing movement. Today, the brewery continues to combine classic brewing methods with experimentation across stouts, ales, lagers, wheat beers, and contemporary hop-forward styles.
